| The
Schumacher UK Lectures
At
the centre of our activities are the Schumacher Lectures, which
attract inspirational speakers from all over the world. In recent
years they have included Christopher
Alexander, Fritjof Capra, Herbert Girardet, Zac Goldsmith, Brian
Goodwin, Patric Holden, Ivan Illich, Satish Kumar, R.D. Laing, Michael
Meacher, George Monbiot, Ann Pettifor, Jonathan Porrit, Susan Roaf,
Anita Roddick, Vandana Shiva, John & Nancy Todd.
Some
of the themes covered by the Schumacher UK Lectures are: economic
globalisation, new economics, sustainable systems, sustainable education,
intermediate technology, alternative technology, renewable energy,
climate change, global warming, local ecosystems, local democracy,
sustainable farming, organic agriculture, complementary medicine
and ecological footprints.
Held
each year since 1978, the Bristol Schumacher Lectures are Britain's premier
environmental gathering, offering an entire day to hear great speakers,
to meet like-minded people - and to celebrate!
The
Manchester Schumacher Lectures, 1996 - 2005, were inspired
by the theme Visions of a New Renaissance, and fired by the
ideas of E.F. Schumacher. These events were organised by Knutsford
Lectures Association, which aimed to nurture spiritual and ecological
well being, in association with Schumacher UK.
The first Leeds Schumacher Lectures are to take place in 2006. They will focus on turning the deep ideas of
sustainable urban development that have emerged over the years from the
Schumacher community into practice.
