THE FORDHALL COMMUNITY LAND INITIATIVE
For several generations the Hollins family have worked to create the beautiful farm that stands in the heart of the Shropshire countryside today.
Based on a farming philosophy that respects the natural world, this small family-run farm has kept the land free from pesticides and herbicides and used ecologically sustainable methods of farming for more than 65 years.
Fordhall Farm is steeped in history. Having once supplied London’s famous Harrod’s store with an exclusive brand of yoghurts and cheeses, been a Country Club in the 1960s and later transforming into a hearty restaurant, Fordhall is no stranger to change.
Now in their early twenties Arthur Hollins’ Youngest children, Charlotte and Ben, are breathing new life into the farm and bringing the Fordhall experience to a new generation.
When faced with development pressures they created the Fordhall Community Land Initiative, which has placed Fordhall into community ownership, and leases the land back to them to farm. It seeks to demonstrate that small-scale farming connected to the local community offers a viable way of life for generations to come, as well as providing opportunities for young entrants to farming.
The first steps have already begun, including opening a Nature Trail, Picnic Area and Farm Shop. Future plans include a small tea room selling local and organic produce, and a resource area promoting sustainable farming and healthy eating.
