THE TRAVEL FOUNDATION
The Travel Foundation is a charity that helps the people and natural environment at destinations, making sure they benefit from tourism - now and in to the future. This helps to keep places beautiful, local culture and traditions alive and gives travellers access to quality, local products and more varied excursions. Keeping destinations special - and helping to ensure there are great places for us all to visit, for generations to come!
So how do they do this? By working with the destinations to find the best ways to protect and enhance the natural environment and ensure that local families in need can make a living out of tourism. This 'best practice'
work is then developed in to practical tools, training and guidelines to help the UK travel industry do similar activities at other destinations across the world.
What are they actually doing now? The Travel Foundation is working to protect precious coral reef in the Caribbean, with the installation of simple reef buoys. Also in the Caribbean, visitors, tour guides and hotel staff are being shown how they can help protect endangered nesting turtles - helping to ensure the survival of this amazing species. In Mexico, the charity is protecting a unique series of natural, freshwater jungle pools called cenotes that you can snorkel and dive in. There is really nothing else like it in the world!
The Foundation is also caring for local people; Working to help farmers supply fresh, local produce to hotels with its 'Adopt a Farmer' scheme and setting up an organic herb growing project at a local school, teaching children new skills and helping the school make an income from tourism by selling the herbs to local hotels. In the Gambia, the charity has helped local guides and taxi drivers offer their services to tourists - enabling some to send their children to school for the first time!
Things are progressing quickly, so to find out the latest on the Travel Foundation's website at www.thetravelfoundation.org.uk.
