THE
1997 SCHUMACHER AWARD RECIPIENT
Richard
Boden
WyeCycle
Richard
Boden,
from the village of Wye in Kent, has made an outstanding contribution
to raising community conscious about waste, its damaging environmental
affects and the social and financial benefits to be derived
from community recycling schemes. Whereas there are countless
other well-supported and effective recycling schemes throughout
the UK, WyeCycle's specific contribution lies in that it first
encourages the reuse of as many waste products as possible,
recycling only those which practicably fall outside this category.
It is an example of where one individual's initiative has
developed an idea into a local enterprise with all-round benefits
to the environment, the community, and the local council.

Association
for Environment Conscious Building
For
many years environmentalists from all walks of life have expressed
grave concern about the impact of building developments, not
only on their immediate environment but on the depletion of
the earth's natural resources, including building materials
and energy use. Building stock is of particular significance
as it represents long-term investment and dictates the way
future generations will, live including their consumption
of such commodities as fossil fuels. Yet despite numerous
individual examples of good practice in ecological building
and low energy houses in the UK, the building profession generally
has continued to invest in short-term low-cost options, rather
than taking a responsible overview. The Hall's initiative
is therefore a most welcome contribution, networking environmental
building awareness through the architects and builders themselves.
