| NATURAL
TECHNOLOGY New Ways of Working with Nature - At the beginning
of a new millennium the potential for a new technological revolution
is becoming ever more apparent. The speakers explained the opportunities
we have to transform technology into a tool for sustainable
development. This applies to architectural design, the widespread
use of solar energy, new systems for waste water treatment and
improved methods for dealing with organic waste. We are delighted
that four distinguished speakers, leading practitioners in the
development and application of natural technologies, have accepted
our invitation to give a Bristol Schumacher Lecture. |

John Todd
Ecological Design and Living Machines
|
|
| |
John Todd is Research Professor of Ecological Engineering
at the University of Vermont. He is also President of Ocean
Arks International, who design and build Johns beautiful
Living Machines which ecologically treat polluted
water. John together with Nancy has been the recipient of ten
major awards including the Lindberg Award, the Chrysler Award
for Innovation in Design, the Teddy Roosevelt Conservation Award
and the UN Recognition for Contributions to the Global Environment.
John will give a highly inspiring talk on the ecological principles
behind the design of his Living Machines.

Susan
Roaf
Towards a Solar Vernacular
|
| |
Susan Roaf is a professor of architecture at Oxford Brookes
University. For the last ten years she has researched the relationship
between energy, the environment and buildings. Not content with
a merely academic approach, she built her own ground-breaking
solar electric house in Oxford, the first in Britain. She publishes
widely on many topics, including the traditional building technologies
of developing countries, and is co-founder of the International
Organisation for Teachers of Architecture. Her talk will demonstrate
just how much can be done to ameliorate the massive environmental
impact of buildings.

Peter
Harper
The
Lifestyle Laboratory
|
| |
Peter
Harper is
Head of Biology at the Centre for Alternative Technology in
Wales. During a varied life in the green movement he has tried
to combine the best elements of science and visionary alternatives,
and has written on a wide range of environmental themes (Radical
Technology, The Natural Garden Book and Lifting the Lid). Using
his own household as a living laboratory, he researches the
problems that householders face in trying to be more sustainable.
In his lecture he will look at how our approach to sustainability
has changed over the last thirty years, including the art of
composting.

Nancy
Todd
Paths to Ecological Consciousness
|
| |
Nancy
Todd co-founded the pioneering New Alchemy Institute with
John on Cape Cod in the early 70s. Their work on environmental
solutions to food, shelter and energy inspired a whole generation
of ecological engineers. Nancy has recorded the work that she
and fellow New Alchemists did in the Journals of the New Alchemists.
With John, Nancy has authored numerous books including Bioshelters,
Ocean Arks, City Farming; Tomorrow is Our Permanent Address
and From Eco Cities to Living Machines. Since 1982 she has edited
the highly respected quarterly newspaper Annals of Earth. Nancy
will provide the perspective that links the individual work
of the other speakers to a new partnership with the natural
world.
