THEME

Visions of a New Renaissance

As we move into the new Millennium there is a widely felt need and opportunity for a new beginning, moving to a new stage for humanity. Manchester Schumacher Lectures have been held every year since 1996, inspired by the theme Visions of a New Renaissance, and fired by the ideas of E.F. Schumacher.

Schumacher is best known for his book "Small is Beautiful", putting the case for reversing the industrial world's trend towards ever bigger institutions, seeing this as being the root of many of today's emerging environmental and social problems.

The Renaissance of the 15th and 16th century saw a flowering of the human spirit across diverse fields of human endeavour and creativity, giving a symbolic inspiration for today's need.

People and Nature

"Great things are done when men and mountains meet" (Gnomic Verses)

The 2001 lectures are particularly concerned with People and Nature - how we organise our affairs, and how we relate to each other and to nature.

They address some of the key issues, informing and providing the spur to action - what needs to be done, what is being done, and what we can individually do.
