Satish
Kumar Founder and President
In
addition to being the founder of the Small School and the Director
of Programmes at Schumacher
College, Satish Kumar is currently the editor of Resurgence
(an international magazine promoting peace, non-violence, ecology,
sustainability, organic agriculture, appropriate technology and
holistic philosophy). He has, in turn, been a Jain Muni (until age
18), a campaigner for land reform in the Bhoodan movement with Vinoba
Bhave (until age 26), and a pilgrim for peace, walking from India
to America without any money, from 1962-1964. In 1968, Satish established
the London School of Non-violence in order to teach the Gandhian
way of passive resistance to the youth of Europe. In November 2001,
Satish was presented with the Jamnalal Bajaj International Award
for "Promoting Gandhian Values Abroad." He is author of
No Destination, his autobiography; You Are, Therefore,
I Am will & The Buddha and the Terrorist published
by Green Books. |

Vala Ragnarsdottir Chairperson
Professor Vala Ragnarsdottir holds a chair in Environmental Sustainability at the University of Bristol. She leads action research to underpin the development of sustainable communities. She also directs studies on biogenic weathering, the life-cycle of soils, and risk-based management of river basins. Vala is a Fellow of the Icelandic Academy of Sciences. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Groups for the European Commission Framework 7 Environment Programme and the NERC Environment and Health Programme. She is editor of eEarth and Associate Editor of Chemical Geology and Geochemical Transactions.

Yolanda
Pot The Administrator
Grew
up in Altea, Spain. Studied dance at the Royal Conservatorium of
Dance and Music in The Hague, Holland. Later she moved to the UK
and studied Modern Languages and European Studies at UWE, Bristol,
UK. Yolanda has worked for Schumacher UK since 2000 developing this
website and running the Schumacher UK office. She is also involved in developing
the Schumacher Institute. |

Jonathon Porritt Chairperson of the 2008 Bristol Schumacher Lectures
Jonathon Porritt is Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commissionand, the Government’s independent watchdog on sustainable development, and Co-Founder and Programme Director of Forum for the Future. He is an eminent writer, broadcaster and commentator on sustainable development. Established in 1996, Forum for the Future is now the UK's leading sustainable development charity, with 70 staff and over 100 partner organisations, including some of the world's leading companies. |

Julia Forster Creative Consultant and Author
Julia Forster worked as the Schumacher Society London Representative and Press Officer from 2004-2006 promoting the Society in the capital and beyond. As a creative consultant, she has worked for a variety of social enterprises, environmental charities and agencies. She's also a writer and her most recent non fiction book, about the nature of inspiration, came out in 2007. As a younger member of the council, Julia's area of interest is attracting young people to join the society. |

Herbert Girardet is an author, consultant and filmmaker. He is a
UN Global 500 Award recipient, and an honorary fellow of the RIBA.
He is author of The Gaia Atlas of Cities, Earthrise
and Creating Sustainable Cities. He was series consultant
on the recent six-part TV series The People's Planet, for
CNN and NHK, Tokyo. He is visiting professor at Middlesex University,
London and chairman of the UK Sustainability Alliance. He is director
of research of the World
Future Council Initiative and involved in developing the Schumacher

Powell, the founder of the Gaia
Coach Institute, is a professionally trained life coach who
has lived and worked on every continent except Antarctica. He sees
the creation of the Institute as the call that refuses to go away.
Stephen spent 27 years as a Reuters correspondent, reporting from
25 countries in Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Schumacher was President of the Schumacher Society from 1990-2000
and has written and lectured extensively on ethics, and the environment.
Diana read history at Oxford, and since the late 70's has been actively
involved in worldwide movements for healing , conflict resolution
and peace through economic and social developement. She has served
on the executive council of over 25 organisations, including the
Centre for International Peace Building, the New Economics Foundation,
the Gandhi Foundation, the Environmental Action Group for Europe
(ECOROPA) and was Founder/Vice Chairman of the Environmental Law
Foundation (ELF). |
